Expert, Compassionate Pediatric Care for Individuals with Autism and Related Disorders, and their Families.
The Team.
Our hiring process is highly selective:
-
Academic Credentials
Our instructors all went through the grueling process of achieving a Master’s in behavior analysis, education or psychology, and Board-Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) and Licensed Behavior Analyst (LBA) status. Receiving instruction from a BCBA results in mastering significantly more learning objectives than if taught by someone without credentials.
-
Experience
Most of our BCBAs have practiced the discipline of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) for over 10 years. Research shows that years of experience as an instructor have a significant impact on the mastery of learning objectives. Our BCBAs’ work experiences are in ABA treatment specifically for ASD. or related disorders They all practice within the scope of their experience.
-
Reputation
In addition to academic credentials and work experience, we vet our clinicians for reputation within the industry by seeking peer feedback and cross-checking at least 2 references. We also run background checks on all of our staff.
-
Mindset
Our BCBAs are goal-oriented. They are kind, patient, (com)passionate experts who work with your child “a step at a time” to reach key milestones. Our BCBAs are in the driver’s seat when it comes to your child’s progress. As such, they continuously switch gears, providing families with updates on bitesize steps and the big picture.
-
Dominant Traits
Our BCBAs are typically warm, approachable, highly organized individuals and efficient communicators. However, we are outcome-driven so anyone qualified who can demonstrate the ability to meaningfully impact the arc of a child’s life is a star in our book and someone with whom we should be in deep conversation.

The Safety of our Staff is our Utmost Concern
Whether the sessions take place at home or in a school setting, an unsafe area can result in injury and a loss of valuable therapy time. We have clear protocols to avoid physically managing clients without their assent, to remove sharp or unsafe objects, to ensure that the furniture is arranged appropriately, and to minimize the risk of the client escaping during a therapy session.
DE+I
-
A Step at a Time encourages diversity, equity, and inclusion. We celebrate our differences in race/color, ethnicity, sexual orientation, disability, pregnancy, sex, gender identity, age, country of origin, religious or spiritual beliefs, and socioeconomic class.
We are committed to upholding DE+I standards throughout the organization and strive to actively collaborate with clients and partners to create a more inclusive environment for all.
-
Our ongoing efforts include quarterly self-assessments via the National Center for Cultural Competence to review performance in the areas of cultural competency and diversity. This process is conducted with all employed clinicians and staff during their quarterly performance review. Results are analyzed and graphed each quarter to ensure organization-wide competency in these areas.
Additionally, staff are required to complete a Cultural Competency Training. This thorough training focuses on the importance of cultural competency, as well as how to best apply this knowledge within our client's homes.
